Question 1: In What Ways Does Your Media Product Use, Develop Or Challenge Forms And Convention of Real Media Products?
Using Participatory Conventions
Developing Conventions
Challenging Conventions
Blurring The Line Of Mode
One of the few conventions our documentary challenged was the level of involvement of the presented. In such real media products as Living With Michael, even though the presenter is often on screen and is involved in the action; they are still not a subject of the documentary. In our documentary Drama To The Max, the presenter, Max, is as much a subject of the docuemntary as any of the other characters. For example, in the arguement scene, either 'side' of the arugement is edited sway the thoughts of the audience. Yes, Max is able to give a piece directly to camera expressing his views, however, this does not mean that the audience particularly agree with him. We thought blurring the line between the observational and participatory modes of documentary would not only be suitable for this narrative, but also allow for a much more natural and realistic experience for the audience. Having a external presenter, rather than Max, would have likely lead to moments not happening as if they would without their presence. By having a subject of the documentary actually also assume the role of presenter, it was evident that the narrative was able to flow much more fluidly without the intrusion of an external presenter. Having said that, the one issue with focusing our documentary on Max, meant that there were moments during the production that would have made great television, and our target audience would have enjoyed watching, however, these were moments that did not involve Max. Thus, due to our commit to filming Max's journey, we missed the occasional dramatic moment that would have likely been captured if our presenter was an external body not tied to a particular member of the cast. |
Question 2: How effective Is The Combination Of Your Main Product And Ancillary Texts?
Internet Banner AD
By designing our poster to work as an internet banner ad, we are more likely to catch the gaze of our target audience. With a higher proportion of young adult being active internet users than any other demographic, it made sense to advertise the documentary online. This is most effectively achieved through banner ads. Despite their small size, I was able to design the version of the poster than would fit the banners, and convey the title and subject line of the documentary, as well as the iconic image of Max that this recurrent in all of the poster designs. |
